Old Mississippi Brick & Heart Pine produces beams and timbers from reclaimed, antique heart pine and cypress. The beams and timbers reflect the natural characteristics the sizing techniques left behind when the trees were first cut down. "Hand-hewn" is the manual process used in historical times to form tree timbers into structural beams. Craftsmen struck timbers with an adze to size the timber for its application. This process left obvious striking marks up and down the beam.

In some areas early saws were powered by rivers. This allowed many more timbers to be sawn each day and gave the wood a rough sawn appearance. "Rough-sawn" timbers are a rough cut, but still much smoother than hand-hewing. Today, hand-hewn beams are the most sought after product in the antique wood industry.

Reclaimed, antique heart pine beams have many uses. They are the source material for most of our milled products. Reclaimed, antique heart pine beams can be used in both structural and cosmetic applications. These include true timber framing where the beams are an integral part of a roof support system to cosmetic applications. Beams and timbers give a home a truly custom feel. Additional charges for services available:

  • Re-saw charges (length or width)
  • Routing out a 2" x 4" channel
  • Filling mortise, peg and nail holes
  • Plane and sand to smooth finish
  • Stain and finish

Special Reclaimed Beam Notes:

When ordering "As-Is" beams, dimensions may vary in lengths by 1' - 3' and widths from 1" - 2". This is due to the nature of hand-hewn beams, and the difficulty to find exact dimensions in antique wood.
